Restructure Working Group
We are pleased to inform you that representatives from the two major voting member organisations Mudo Taekwondo Academy and Taekwondo Union of New Zealand, together with Korean Training Martial ..
Thanks for your patience with this everyone. We are pleased to advise that the TNZ website has been reactivated and is now operational. We still have some further updates, developments and ..
Uptake on the membership data-base is gaining momentum now – there are already over 1800 members registered – and it’s been great to see member-organisation clubs registering their members. It’s important to point out here that the database is an efficient and essential tool which over time will help TNZ gather important statistical data to give us more insight into our membership in terms of allocating resources, funding and development programmes across a wide-section of our membership demo graph. It will also help us with our reporting to external organisations we regularly interact with, i.e., NZOC, Sport NZ, WTF & OTU. Further development of the data-base, which will include applications for WTF Global Athlete Licences, Global Official Licences and other services are underway to improve efficiencies for both members and TNZ.
Due to the voting process at the 2016 TNZ Annual General Meeting held in Auckland 14th May not meeting the requirements of the TNZ constitution, the TNZ Board resolved to hold a re-election and AGM on 10th September. Until then an Interim Board has been appointed. Please our Executive page to view the Interim Board at http://www.taekwondonz.org.nz/about-us/executive/
Dear TNZ Member Organisations,
Please pass this communication on to your members, clubs and Instructors.
TNZ Membership Data-Base & AGM Voting Process
TNZ has already received very positive feedback from clubs of various member organisations (MO) who have started uploading their membership details into the TNZ membership data-base. We would like to thank those who have got on board promptly with this important step towards moving TNZ on from it’s current position and for your messages of support regarding the voting process.
If your club has not yet received a login or password, please contact the TNZ Data-Base Administrator, Abraham Janssen at: abraham46@xtra.co.nz
Remember, once all clubs have registered their members and indicated who their MO is, TNZ will invoice the respective MO in accordance with the data from the database. Each Voting-MO must pay the invoice by the AGM which therefore gives VMO's valid voting rights on the day of the election which is scheduled for September 10, 2016. Non-VMOs must also pay on time.
Again we remind you all of the importance for all MOs clubs to complete their registration promptly and accurately. This process is critical for our athletes, officials and members so we can continue to participate in key upcoming events and move TNZ forward. Under the Interim Board structure we cannot fully access essential services and there is no access to WTF funding. Please all do your part in making this happen.
Rio Olympics – Andrea Kilday
The Olympic Taekwondo event is almost upon us and Andrea Kilday will represent New Zealand in the Female under 49kgs division. Andrea is currently at the Athlete Village in Rio along with coach Grandmaster Oh and will be busy making her final preparations to compete.
Recently there was some media attention around funding support for Andrea. As you are all aware TNZ is currently operating under an Interim Board with very limited people-resource which resulted in a longer than normal handover process for our various systems causing delay. As above, due to the current TNZ position we cannot access WTF funding at this time and won't be able to do so until after the new AGM and re-election. So in the meantime we have freed up limited funds from existing working capital to help Andrea out with covering the recent costs of her preparations for Rio. However, there will still be a shortfall until we can access further funding post the AGM, needless to say that we all need to carry on with the AGM, re-election and restructuring process and stress the importance of all MOs supporting this. We have made contact with Andrea who is currently at the Athlete Village in Rio and have sent a message of support and an apology for the delay.
Taekwondo New Zealand and all its members wish Andrea every success in Rio.
TNZ Website & Communications
We are also in the process of changing our website host and re-vamping the TNZ website. While this process is being undertaken we won’t be able to make any announcements or provide updates on our website. However we will continue to send out communications to all TNZ MO’s, officials and stakeholders and are also keeping WTF, NZOC, OTU and Kukkiwon updated on our progress. There is a lot of misinformation out there presently, particularly on Facebook, so please all ensure these communications are passed on so all members are kept informed.
2016 Oceania Championships
These have been re-scheduled for 26th-28th November 2016 in Fiji. This is an important event for us to participate in. While we are working through the AGM, re-election and re-structuring of TNZ we still need to get a selection & preparation process underway as soon as possible. Can those who are interested in helping TNZ make this happen for our athletes, please contact the Interim Secretary General at info@TaekwondoNZ.org.nz with an expression of interest and suggested game-plan so we can consider, then allocate resource and help.
In closing, we ask that everyone pulls together to help move TNZ on from its current position. Please be rest assured that the Interim Board and key voting member organisations are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent election process at the upcoming AGM and that TNZ is able to forge ahead to deliver the services and support you all deserve.
Kind Regards
Master Matt Ransom

Communication to TUNZ Instructors and Members
This communication is to help keep TUNZ Instructors and members informed of the current situation with the sport’s governing body, Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ). Members may be hearing different accounts of what is currently happening with TNZ and other TNZ voting member organisations (VMOs).
Through regular communications our aim is to keep you all fully informed of any activity and progress, and to ensure you are aware of what TUNZ is doing to help promote the interests of you as our members through the governance of Taekwondo within New Zealand. Set out below are answers to recently asked questions:
What happened at the recent TNZ AGM that resulted in the appointment of an Interim Board?
Due to the voting process at the 2016 TNZ Annual General Meeting held in May not meeting the requirements of it’s constitution (which is based on VMO membership numbers), the TNZ Board has resolved to hold a re-election on 10th September 2016. Further details will be advised to TNZ member organisations in due course. Until then an Interim Board has been appointed. The Interim Board is detailed on the TNZ website: www.taekwondonz.org.nz
Why are membership numbers important?
VMO membership numbers determine the number of votes and board positions each VMO may hold on the TNZ board. Currently each TNZ VMO can appoint their own Board member representative/s onto the TNZ Board at one per 250 members, up to a maximum of 4 per VMO. This includes elected TNZ Board positions. Elections occur every three years.
What is happening in the interim?
TNZ will shortly outline the voting process for the upcoming re-election. This will require all VMO’s to register their clubs and members onto a TNZ membership data base which will clearly determine the numbers per VMO. This database will be compatible with WTF guidelines and the requirements of the sport internationally, e.g. proof of participating numbers and vital statistical data, which TNZ has been lacking for many years. Further, this in turn will benefit the sport with planning and managing resources across the areas that best need support or more development. Once this process is complete, and the number of members per VMO’s has been verified, the re-election will occur as will another AGM.
How many positions does TUNZ currently have on TNZ?
TUNZ holds four seats on the Interim TNZ board. TUNZ /TNZ Board members are appointed onto the TNZ Board following nomination and approval from the TUNZ Executive Council. Current members are: Matt Ransom, Vijay Chhika, Gina Guo, John Schofield.
Why is TNZ important to TUNZ?
TUNZ aims to help TNZ emerge from the upcoming re-election and AGM with an improved structure and focus that will deliver better services and opportunities for members. It’s certainly the desire of the current Union TNZ Board representatives to move TNZ on from its current structure and to upgrade and streamline the organisation into a sport's body that develops real growth for the sport at all levels.
Why is your Membership Important?
With a strong TUNZ membership base we can through meaningful representation on TNZ help ensure positive outcomes with the governance of the sport for the betterment of all. This doesn’t just mean our holding positions on the Board; it is also our desire to ensure the right people with the right skill-base are actively involved in TNZ’s administration and operations. TUNZ has a great depth of skilled and talented members who can make a real difference. We will work with other like-minded organisations to achieve this in order to promote fairness, equity and transparency for the benefit of all members.
You are all encouraged to keep the TUNZ Executive Council informed of any information, ideas or suggestions that will help support and achieve our shared objectives with the governing body.
If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to forward these to secretary@tunz.net.nz. We will keep you informed as events develop further.
Yours in Taekwondo

Communication to TUNZ Instructors and Members
Further to our last communication to keep TUNZ Instructors and members informed on progress with the sport’s governing body, Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ), here is the latest development: TNZ Membership Data-Base & AGM Voting Process Announcement
As you are all aware, due to the voting process at the 2016 TNZ Annual General Meeting not meeting the requirements of the TNZ constitution, the TNZ Board resolved to hold a re-election and AGM in September. TUNZ is committed to helping TNZ with its current restructuring process to better serve members while keeping the sport here in New Zealand up to date with WTF guidelines and requirements. One major step forward is the introduction of the TNZ membership database.
In addition to complying with WTF guidelines and the requirements of the sport internationally e.g., proof of participating numbers and vital statistical data, (which TNZ also needs to plan the ongoing development of Taekwondo in New Zealand), the database will also serve to compute the voting rights of each voting member organisation (VMO) at the upcoming AGM which is tentatively scheduled for September 10, 2016. Therefore all VMOs (such as TUNZ) and non-VMOs are expected to do their part in making this happen.
Each member organisations’ clubs will be allocated a username and password by the TNZ and must register their member details completely and accurately. Shortly your club will be contacted by way of email by the TNZ Database Administrator, Abraham Janssen, with your own login and password. As TUNZ is a voting member organisation we are required to comply with this process which we support as it will help towards ensuring TNZ and the sport is able to move forward from its current position. All TUNZ clubs will need to register the following details for each member:
Once all VMOs and non-VMO clubs have registered their members, TNZ will invoice the respective member organisation (TUNZ) in accordance with the data from the database. Each VMO must pay the invoice by the AGM which will give VMO's valid voting rights on the day of the election. Hence, in order for TUNZ to have good representation for our members at the election we encourage you all.
The data collected by TNZ will only be used for audit purposes; use of the data for any other purposes is restricted under the Privacy Act 1993.
If you have any questions regarding this, please email the Union Secretary at secretary@tunz.net.nz Yours in Taekwondo
