Sparring is a major component of Taekwondo and features heavily in our Grading Syllabus as well as Tournament scene.  Just like any other sport Taekwondo involves a moderate to high risk of injury and accordingly we have specific safety equipment that minimises the risk of injury to the practitioner.  Just as a hockey player cannot take the field without a mouth guard and shin guard, there is a certain level of safety equipment that is mandatory for a Taekwondo student.
For those Taekwondo Students who choose to participate inTaekwondo Tournament Sparring Competitions, it is a mandatory requirement that a full set of protective equipment is worn.  For those who do not compete in Tournaments, the requirements will increase as they progress through the grades.
Within our Grading Syllabus, Students will encounter sparring from yellow belt onwards.  The sparring begins at a non-contact for Children, light contact for Adults, and as you progress through the grades the intensity of the contact increases and so to does the risk of injury.  In the interests of protecting our Students, the Christchurch Olympic Taekwondo Club Inc. encourages all Students to obtain all the safety equipment listed below but as a minimum standard we have introduced the following mandatory protective equipment requirements for all Students participating in a Grading:

WHITE  BELT TO YELLOW BELT:

MOUTHGUARD

YELLOW BELT TO GREEN BELT  BLUE TABS:

MOUTHGUARD
ARM GUARDS
SHIN & INSTEP GUARDS

BLUE BELT TO RED TABS:

MOUTHGUARD
ARM GUARDS
SHIN & INSTEP GUARDS
CHEST PROTECTOR

RED BELT and ABOVE:

MOUTHGUARD
ARM GUARDS
SHIN & INSTEP GUARDS
HEADGUARD

For all of us Grading, these protective equipment requirements will be enforced and those without the necessary equipment will be unable to participate in the Grading due to the Safety Risk.  Students will also be expected to have their required level of protective equipment at every Training Class  to ensure that safety is paramount during training where sparring is regularly practiced.  Those without the required protective equipment will either be excluded from sparring during class or restricted to non-contact sparring only.
The Club currently sources a supply of protective equipment.
Please contact Joanne Vergeer to order your required equipment.
